Rescuegrass is found growing in the South Texas Plains and the Edwards Plateau in various soil types. It is a weedy mid-grass that reaches a height of 16 to 31 inches tall with drooping seedheads. It was introduced from South America as a forage grass, but is now found along roadsides, vacant lots and disturbed sites. It gets it's name because it is one of the first cool season grasses to flower in the spring, hence coming to the cattleman's rescue after a drought or winter. The forage value of this plant for wildlife is fair and is good for livestock. |
