Allthorn can be found growing in various soil types of the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains. It is a thorny and much-branched shrub that can reach a height of 24 feet. Allthorn is mostly leafless except after a rain when small leaves emerge. The flowers are small and have four greenish-white petals. Allthorn blooms from March to October. The fruit is a black berry and is eaten by birds, such as quail, and small mammals, like jack rabbits. New growth of the plant is sweet and browsed by livestock and white-tailed deer, however the thorns of this plant may cause tearing of the skin or puncture wounds to these animals. Allthorn also gives good cover for small mammals and reptiles.
