| Rouge-plant can be found in colonies and in various types of shaded soils of the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains. It is a bushy perennial standing one to five feet tall. The leaves are one to three inches long and have wavy margins. The pink to white flowers grow on a spike measuring one to two inches in length. The top of the spike has reddish-pink buds and the base has bright red to orange fruit. Rouge-plant blooms from May to October. The fruits are eaten by Rio Grande turkeys, chachalacas, mourning doves, white-winged doves and numerous species of passerine birds. The leaves are consumed by javelinas. |
