Seedling with cotyledons.  Key characteristics: cotyledons are round and smooth; first leaves are simple.

Vegetative plant.  Key characteristics: as the plant matures, trifoliate leaves emerge.  Stipules may also be present in leaf axils.

Seed.  Seed of Desmodium paniculatum are approximately 3.0 mm long with a kidney shape and the hilum located within the depression.

Life cycle: perennial.
