A COMBINATION OF APHIDS, ALFALFA WEEVILS, AND DROUGHT

Posted 3-16-06

A COMBINATION OF APHIDS, ALFALFA WEEVILS, AND DROUGHT is causing great damage to many alfalfa fields across Oklahoma.  It is critical that farmers check fields carefully for insect infestations because the very dry conditions are highly favorable to aphids, but quite stressful to alfalfa plants.  The combination of insect damage and drought may lead to loss of stands.  Even though there is little moisture available for alfalfa growth at this time, it is profitable to spray for insect control in order to save stands and future production potential.
