Stem Nematode Symptoms in Alfalfa

Symptoms of stem nematodes include shortened stems, swollen nodes, and crinkled leaves.  This disease, caused by nearly microscopic worms, normally begins appearing during years two to four of a stand and is seen primarily prior to first cutting of the season.  Stem nematodes can cause relatively small spots of very little growth during early spring.
