Quadrat for Sampling Stand

Quadrat Sampler

A relatively long quadrat can be helpful in determining stand density.  This one is 18"X6" which is 3/4 of a square foot.  Twenty stems are counted in the quadrat is equivalent to 27 stems per square foot.

A quadrat such as this can be used during the dormant season to help determine the are covered by crowns.  Approximately 40% of the area inside the quadrat is occupied by alfalfa crowns.  This is a "full stand".
