Quadrat Sample 

A square quadrat can be helpful in determining stand density.  This one is 12"X12" (a square foot).  A quadrat such as this can be used during the dormant season to help determine the are covered by crowns.  Approximately 25% of the area inside the quadrat is occupied by alfalfa crowns.  This is not a "full stand", and plans should be underway to replace the field.
