Sampling with a Quadrat 

A square quadrat can be helpful in determining stand density.  This one is 12"X12" (a square foot).  A quadrat such as this can be used during the dormant season to help determine the area covered by crowns.  Approximately 45% of the area inside the quadrat is occupied by alfalfa crowns.
