Alfalfa Seed Pods 

Alfalfa seed pods ripen over a period of 2 to 3 weeks.  When 50 percent of the pods are turning brown, it is time to apply a chemical desiccant or to swath the alfalfa into windrows for drying and combining.  Pods with many well formed seeds have three or more coils.
