Millet As A Companion Crop

Sorghum-Sudangrass and German (Italian) millet are frequently used as companion crops for fall-sown alfalfa.  This is especially important where alfalfa is sown in sandy soil.  The warm season grasses die as soon as freezing weather begins and leaves a relatively pure stand of alfalfa.  The grasses live long enough to protect the small alfalfa but do not live long enough to compete.
