- Larval populations typically exceed economic threshold
levels during April and fields that have not been sprayed, as well as, those previously
sprayed should be checked at intervals recommended by the "shake bucket"
sampling program.
- Damage by larvae usually requires at least one insecticide
application, however, early first harvest (prebud or bud stage) may be considered as an
alternative to additional spray applications after the 20th of the month.
- When harvesting rather than spraying is used as a control
for weevil larvae there is a risk of damage to regrowth due to feeding by larvae and
adults. If rainfall occurs and hay cannot be dried and baled rapidly, many larvae may
survive to spin cocoons and emerge as adults.
