Winter grazing of established stands to remove foliage
growth that accumulated since the last fall harvest ("flash-grazing" with high
stocking rates for short times) can reduce overwintering egg populations by 50-70% and
result in lower numbers of larvae in spring.
Scouting for larval infestations should begin at
accumulation of 150 DD after January 1. Use "shake bucket" method to check
fields; spray with short residual insecticide if larval numbers exceed the economic
threshold.
