- January 1 is the starting date for day-degree (DD)
accumulations used with the "shake bucket" scouting method for decisions on
spraying for weevil larvae. Field sampling need not begin until 150 DD have accumulated
from January 1.
- Winter grazing of established stands to remove foliar
growth that accumulated since the last fall harvest can reduce overwintering egg
populations by 50-70% and result in lower numbers of larvae in spring.
