Larval populations typically exceed the economic threshold
during March and it is important that fields be checked at regular intervals according to
the "shake bucket" scouting program.
Fields that were not grazed during winter may be grazed for
3-4 weeks beginning in March (spring grazing) to destroy eggs in fall growth killed by
freezing during winter and larvae in new alfalfa growth. Begin grazing before new growth
exceeds 3-4" in height.
