- Grazing seedling stands is rarely justified. Plants need all the green top growth
possible for development of strong root systems. An exception would be to graze weedy
grasses that are shading seedling alfalfa plants.
- Harvesting fall regrowth of alfalfa can be done at any time in the fall without
negative effects on production or stand life. A major problem associated with fall
harvesting alfalfa is drying time. Short days and cool temperatures prolong drying times.
Grazing after a killing frost (normally mid to late November) reduces the risk of leaving
hay in windrows for extended periods.
