Stack Fires

Putting high-moisture hay in a stack is an invitation to hay stack fire caused by spontaneous generation. For small square bales, moisture content should be no more than at 20%. During warm, moist conditions reduce to 18%. The upper limit for large packages is about 16% for bales stored in a barn. For round bales stored outside, moisture content at baling can be increased to about 20%.
