OKLAHOMA ALFALFA PRODUCTION CALENDAR

Forage Quality

  • Nutritive value of alfalfa increases during the fall as temperatures cool. Hay making, however, becomes more difficult because of poor drying conditions. It is critical to harvest hay using a crimper and allow it to dry in small windrows to hasten drying.
  • All stored hay should be sampled and analyzed for forage quality. Knowing forage quality helps producers know the value of their hay for the cash market as well as that they plan to use on-farm.
