- New alfalfa stands should be up and growing before October.
Planting alfalfa in October without irrigation should be considered a significant risk
because the frequency of rains normally decreases quickly.
- Very thin new stands can be effectively thickened by
drilling seed into a good seed bed. It is important to press seeds into moist soil and
cover with about 1/2 inch of soil. If stands were lost by flooding, be sure to repair the
drainage before investing additional establishment costs.
