FALL ARMYWORMS IN NEW STANDS

Aside from problems with foliage-feeders in established stands, several species of caterpillars, most notably the fall armyworm and green cloverworm, may infest new stands of alfalfa soon after plants have emerged. The high cost of establishing alfalfa certainly warrants the cost of scouting and use of insecticides to prevent damage by these species, particularly when infestations may result in loss of stands. Additional information on insecticides registered for control of foliage-feeders can be found in OSU Extension Facts #7150.
