GRASSHOPPERS IN NEW ALFALFA STANDS

New stands that are emerging in September may be damaged by grasshoppers migrating into fields from grassy or weedy areas along fence rows and other uncultivated areas. At this time of the season, most grasshoppers will have reached the adult stage. They can cause serious damage to seedling plants and may lead to loss of stand, particularly near the margins of fields.

Insecticides that are registered for control of grasshoppers in alfalfa may not be highly effective against adults. Be certain to recheck fields within 2-3 days after spraying to determine if a second application may be needed. The cost of establishing a stand of alfalfa is sufficiently high that cost of a second application to prevent stand loss would be warranted. Additional information on insecticides registered for control of grasshoppers can be found in OSU Extension Facts #7150.
