Fall Johnsongrass Control In Alfalfa

September is a good time to remove Johnsongrass from alfalfa. Some producers use spot application of Roundup® and it does a good job of killing the johnsongrass. The problem with Roundup® is that it will also kill alfalfa, so there is often a bare area where each clump of Johnsongrass was sprayed.

A more selective herbicide is Poast Plus®. Spot treatment with Poast Plus® will selectively kill Johnsongrass without injuring alfalfa. Mix 1 1/4 ounce each of Poast Plus® and DASH per one gallon of water. Then spray Johnsongrass plants until wet, but not dripping. It is important that soil moisture is adequate and johnsongrass plants are actively growing when sprayed. Read the Poast Plus® label for details.
