Japanese Brome
COMMON NAME: Japanese Brome
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bromus japonicus Thunb. ex Murr.
TYPE: Winter Annual Cool-season Weedy Grass
DESCRIPTION                                                                  
    Germination: From late summer through fall.
    Reproduction: Seed maturing May-June.
    Stems: Erect, up to 3 ft tall, sometimes bending.
    Leaves: Hair on both sheath and blade.
Flowers/
Inflorescence:
Seed in 5- to 10-flowered spikelet in large open panicle.
  Fruit: Seed unit with lemma and palea attached, awn on lemma about 1½ -2 times length of seed.

FOUND:

Throughout the state, found in new fall-planted stands and thinning stands.

CONTROL:

Highly competitive with seedling alfalfa. Control in new fall-planted stands and in thinning stands with POAST PLUS or SELECT.
