Shepherdspurse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)

This is a cool-season annual broadleaf weed that can be competitive with fall-planted alfalfa.  It is the major cool-season broadleaf found in old fields.  Note the appearance of an overwintering rosette stage (left) and spring flowering stage (right).
