Wild Garlic

COMMON NAME: Wild Garlic
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Allium vineale L.
TYPE: Winter Perennial, Monocot
DESCRIPTION                                                                 
    Germination: Seeds germinate and bulbs sprout late summer to early winter.
    Reproduction: Vegetative by soft-shell and hard-shell bulbs, aerial bulblets and by seed, flowering in May-June.
    Stems: Smooth, waxy, leafy to middle.
    Leaves: Nearly round, hollow, attached to lower half of stem.
Flowers/
Inflorescence:
Small greenish-white, borne on short stems above aerial bulblets
    Fruit: Black, flat-sided seed.

FOUND:

Throughout state, only occasionally in alfalfa.

CONTROL:

Main problem is garlicky flavored milk from eating leaves. No selective way to control in alfalfa, so need to control in rotational crops.
