Palmer Amaranth

COMMON NAME: Palmer Amaranth
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.
TYPE: Summer Annual Broadleaf
DESCRIPTION                                                           
    Germination: April-September.
    Reproduction: By seed July-October.
    Stems: Erect, branched, may be red.
    Leaves: Long-petioled, egg-shaped, white blotch on upper surface sometimes.
   Flower/
Inflorescence:
Terminal spike to 1 1/2 feet long, male and female flower on separate plants.
Fruit: Thick stiff bracts, seed black, 1/16 inch diameter.

FOUND:

Throughout the state.  Problem in both spring planted alfalfa and thinning stands.

CONTROL:

Can be controlled in newly spring planted alfalfa and thinning stands with BUTYRAC 200 and PURSUIT.  In established stands, PURSUIT applied after first harvest has given the best control, since it has residual activity.   PURSUIT resistant plants have been reported, so be aware of that.
