Redroot Pigweed

COMMON NAME: Redroot Pigweed
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Amaranthus retroflexus L.
TYPE: Summer Annual Broadleaf
DESCRIPTION  
    Germination: April-September.
    Reproduction: By seed, July-October.
    Stems: Erect, stout, branched, often red at base.
    Leaves: Simple, alternate, long-petioled, hairs on underside.
Flowers/
Inflorescence:
Terminal panicle of several crowded stout spikes.   Eight inches long and up to two inches wide, very stiff bracts up to 1/4 inch long.
Fruit: Small black seeds, 1/32 inch diameter.

FOUND:

Statewide, but mostly eastern counties.

CONTROL:

Can be controlled in newly spring planted alfalfa and in thinning stands with BUTYRAC 200 and PURSUIT.
