Barnyardgrass

COMMON NAME: Barnyardgrass
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.
TYPE: Summer Annual Warm-season Weedy Grass
DESCRIPTION                                    
    Germination: May-June
    Reproduction: By seed July-September
    Stems: Erect to bending, branched lower nodes, no hair.
    Leaves: No ligule, no hair or fuzz.
Flowers/
Inflorescence:
1-flowered spikelet in panicle, often with appressed branches.
Fruit: Seed units with lemma and palea attached, with or with out short awn on lemma.

FOUND:

Throughout the state. Found in new spring planted stands in eastern counties, not often in established stands.  

CONTROL:

Use preplant application of BALAN or TREFLAN, or spray emerged seedlings with POAST PLUS or SELECT.  Control usually not recommended in thinning stands because usually not profitable.
