Goosegrass

COMMON NAME: Goosegrass
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.
TYPE: Summer Annual Warm-season Weedy Grass
DESCRIPTION                                                    
    Germination: May-July.
    Reproduction: Seed in fingerlike spikes, flowering July-October.
    Stems: Erect to spreading, branched, no hair, flattened, whitish-green near ground.
    Leaves: Blade mostly no hair, occasionally sparsely hairy; sheath compressed, margin and mouth hairy.
Fruit/
Inflorescence:
Panicle with 1-10 finger-like branches, 2-9 fertile florets/spikelet.
Fruit: Seed usually hulled, dark brown, sometimes whitish pericarp.

FOUND:

In central and eastern counties in new spring plantings.

CONTROL:

Use preplant application of BALAN or TREFLAN, or spray emerged seedlings with POAST PLUS or SELECT.  Important to treat small seedlings (2 to 6 inches tall).
