COMMON NAME: | Kochia, Fireweed, Burning bush |
SCIENTIFIC NAME: | Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad. |
TYPE: | Annual Warm-season Broadleaf Weed |
DESCRIPTION | |
Germination: | Late winter to early spring (February-May). |
Reproduction: | By seeds in late summer. |
Stems: | Smooth, green, with many axillary stems at top of plant, from a few inches to over 6 feet high. Sometimes known as fireweed. |
Leaves: | Alternate, simple, entire, sessile, lance-shaped. |
Flowers/ Inflorescence: |
In axils of upper leaves and in terminal panicles. |
Fruit: | Seed in hull or membranaceous seedcoat. |
FOUND: |
Kochia may be found in cropland, dry pastures, and rangeland. Problems with Kochia occur in spring planted alfalfa in the northwestern part of the state and often it is found in thinning older stands of alfalfa. |
CONTROL: |
Control of Kochia with BUTYRAC 200 is variable. Good control of Kochia is possible with PURSUIT. It is important to treat Kochia when weeds are small and actively growing. |
