Ryegrass

COMMON NAME: Ryegrass
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lolium multiflorum Lam.
TYPE: Annual Cool-season Weedy Grass
DESCRIPTION                                                                       
    Germination: August to March.
    Reproduction: By seeds May to July.
    Stems: Purplish at the base, from 1 to 2.5 feet tall.
    Leaves: Shiny dark area flat blades 1/8 to 14 inch wide, prominent veins, auricles, and no hairs.
Flowers/
Inflorescence:
A slender spike, 5-38 spikelets that are 4- to 17-flowered.
Fruit: Seed unit includes lemma and palea.

FOUND:

Ryegrass is found in fence lines, pastures, wheat and alfalfa. Ryegrass plants are very competitive with fall planted alfalfa.

CONTROL:

Good control can be obtained with both fall and spring applications of POAST PLUS and SELECT. Also, good control can be obtained with spring applications of POAST PLUS, but no data proves the effectiveness of spring applications of SELECT.
